The Official Santa Gertrudis Nu-Gen Project

Dr. Burton McDaniel of MC Ranch, the supervisor for the Official Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) Project, has announced that this innovative program has completed Phase IV and is now producing NG Santa Gertrudis that meet the SGBI Standard of Excellence.

The Official SGBI Nu-Gen Project began as the brain-storm of many dedicated Santa Gertrudis breeders and was led by then-SGBI Exec Jim Reeves to take advantage of many years of genetic improvements documented by the current Shorthorn and Brahman breeds to develop new genetics (thus the name Nu-Gen) for today's Santa Gertrudis.  In February 1994, the SGBI Breed Standards Committee presented the SGBI Board a plan that would create a new Santa Gertrudis "strain" or gene pool by reconstructing the original 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Shorthorn animal currently recognized as a purebred Santa Gertrudis.

A standing committee was charged with oversight and approval of every phase of the project until that final 3/8 x 5/8 animal was produced and tested on existing purebred seed stock.  This committee consisted of the current SGBI Executive Director, Joe Jones of Briggs Ranches, Wylie Taliaferro of Double TT Ranch, Bill Barrett of Five Oaks Ranch, Richard Hood of Double Circle Ranch, and Dr. Jim Sanders.  In 2007, Dan Wendt of Wendt Ranch was impressed with the progress made in this project and became a limited partner with the McDaniels.

Nu-Gen cattle were displayed April 15-17 at the 2010 SGBI Annual Meeting, Marriott Cool Springs Franklin, Franklin, Tennessee outside Nashville.

Embryos from Nu-Gen female Miss Jane and Wendt's Superman 1818 were delivered to the Wendt Ranch April 28.  The next Wendt flush will use Partner 5273 semen.

We are proud to be a part of the NuGen Project.
