THe Legacy of Wendt Ranch
Wendt Ranch began in 1909, when R.A. Wendt registered the “Combination S” brand in Matagorda County and established the foundation of the ranch with crossbred cattle.
In 1954, R.A. and his son Dan formed R.A. Wendt & Son, Herd #621 in the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International registry, and immediately began keeping detailed performance records. Their commitment to data-driven decisions shaped the direction of the herd and gave cattlemen confidence in the future of Wendt genetics within their own programs.
After R.A.’s passing in 1969, the partnership transitioned into what we know today as Wendt Ranch.
From the 1970s through the early 2000s, Dan and his wife Jane expanded the ranch’s reach globally. Their strong performance program and the reputation of their herd sires opened doors to international markets, exporting cattle to breeders in Argentina, Brazil, Morocco, Australia, Russia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and across the United States.
Over the years, Wendt Ranch produced many of the breed’s most recognized sires—starting with Superman and Crackerjack, followed by the next generation of influential bulls. In the late ’80s and ’90s, Dan and Jane’s daughter Nancy Wendt Kubecka and her husband Gene bred sires such as Buckeye and Partner. Their son, Daniel Kubecka, bred Sheriff, whose influence continues to appear in today’s top-performing pedigrees. Their daughter, Jenna Kubecka Sneed, bred Gangster, the sire of the ranch’s well-known All Star bull.
In 2016, Dan and Jane sold the cattle operation to their daughter and son in law, Nancy and Gene Kubecka, and grandson, Daniel and his wife Lauren Kubecka, along with their children, Kinsley, Laney, Callie and Cooper Kubecka. Wendt Ranch is now in its fourth generation of operation, with the fifth generation’s growing
involvement.
The Family Behind Today's Operation
Today, Wendt Ranches is guided by a partnership built on family, experience, and a shared commitment to advancing the Santa Gertrudis breed. The operation is led by Gene and Nancy Kubecka, along with their son Daniel Kubecka and his wife Lauren, who together represent the fourth and fifth generations stewarding the ranch’s heritage.
Gene and Nancy bring decades of hands-on ranching, cattle evaluation, and herd development experience. Nancy, daughter of Dan and Jane Wendt, grew up immersed in the Santa Gertrudis breed and continues to bring strategic insight and historical perspective to the program. Gene’s lifelong involvement in cattle production, performance evaluation, and daily ranch operations ensures the herd maintains the structural integrity, fertility, and functionality the ranch has been known for across generations.
Daniel and Lauren represent the next chapter of the ranch. Daniel’s passion for genetics, herd improvement, and long-term breeding strategy drives the ranch’s modern approach. He oversees performance data, sire selection, and the expansion of the ranch’s advanced reproductive programs. Lauren plays an integral role in customer relations, marketing, and ranch-to-table beef operations, helping ensure that the ranch’s story and values are clearly communicated to both cattlemen and beef customers.
Together, they operate as Wendt Ranches Partners, combining tradition with innovation. Their commitment to a progressive AI and embryo transfer program has positioned the ranch at the forefront of producing elite Santa Gertrudis cattle that excel both in the pasture and in the show ring. By leveraging genomics, performance data, and proven cow families, the family continues to push the envelope on structural soundness, maternal excellence, and breed-leading performance.
With the next generation already active in the show barn and around the ranch, the partnership’s vision is clear: honor the legacy that built this operation, while continually advancing the genetics, integrity, and reputation of the herd for generations to come.

Raising the Next Generation
When it comes to youth in agriculture, they are at the heart of everything we do. Raising our own kids in the industry—and providing show heifers for others—has given us the opportunity to make a lasting impact. Through these experiences, we’re helping shape the next generation of agriculturists and building a stronger future for agriculture.
